almost heat stroke

I’m pretty sure. Thirty-six fucking C and I went grocery shopping. I was only outside for a couple of minutes going in and out of the grocery store and LCBO.

Apparently, unloading the groceries and taking out the garbage was too much for me.

Huge headache after. Needed ice water, sudden desire to turn our hot tub into a cold plunge.

But that would take too long.

Fuck.

i’m not a football guy

And I mean soccer for the locals. I don’t consider American football worth the effort – talk about boring. I mock soccer for being tedious (and it is, compared to hockey or basketball, and less interesting from a strategic standpoint than baseball), but man.

American football is so fucking dull.

Stop, go. Stop, go. Can’t score? Kick it (the only time in reality that anyone actually uses their goddamn foot on the ball, despite the name).

Put poor kids who had no other way out into a situation where all they have to do is injure themselves or others, and give some too much money, and the rest, string along for two to three years until they’re too broke down to compete, and bring in the next poor sucker who is on the verge of CTE.

Hockey has contact, sure, but there’s skill there. It’s not just about pounding into someone else for sixty minutes, while a handful of other guys actually get to show skill.

Anyway, of all the big sports, it’s by far the worst.

Or UFC.

UFC’s the worst.

UFC fucking sucks.

Comics: Invincible 5-7, Brit: Cold Death 1 (I'll admit, I didn't get the hype at first, but there's been a good twist, so it's less generic now.)

i hate being that guy

Look, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to live, but in my experience, the folks who are loudest about how you should live, are often the weakest in actually following through with that.

Those who are living the way they want generally don’t crow about it; they offer humble notes that they put out there and if someone takes inspiration from it, great. If not, well, that has little bearing on how the first person’s life continues to go.

They’ve figured it out. Those saying, “behave this way!” are often not behaving that way.

(See Tolle, Eckhart, Robbins, Tony and Trump, Donald)

So when I post be kind eighteen times, it’s a much a reminder to myself as it is anything. I don’t feel like I’m being very kind these days.

I’m very empathetic. Of that, there’s no doubt. I feel the weight of the world and everyone else’s emotional state keenly.

The problem is that I don’t act on it. I don’t offer to listen, or demonstrate compassion, or help out in any way.

I sit back. I evaluate. I judge. I know what I should be doing, but I don’t.

I make excuses about needing to handle my own stressors first; but maybe that’s just a cop-out.

Depression as procrastination for engaging with life and other people

(It certainly kills my drive to put myself out there.)

Anyway, that’s my thought for the day. Start small, do a few good things for the people you love. Then, world peace and the end of hunger.

weird morning

The dogs and cats let me sleep, even after I woke up at five after five in a panic, thinking my alarm hadn’t gone off, and then realizing I didn’t work today, because it’s Saturday, but also, I really had to pee and that getting up to do that is typically a trigger for the free-for-all that is cats pawing at me and dogs licking my face, the relentlessness of which shaves an hour or two off my sleep every Saturday.

And yet…

They let me go until six-fifty-three.

What good boys and girls.

For once.

phantom menace

Every once in a while, when I’ve highly esteemed a thing, or dismissed it out of hand, or ranted against its mediocrity, I like to re-experience it, to see if I really got it right. Older, more mature viewing. Maybe it’s not the masterpiece I thought, or the disaster it seemed. Maybe I wasn’t mature enough or in the right headspace to understand.

I’m not talking about how my love of The A-Team or Dukes of Hazzard as a child has been thoroughly reevaluated as an adult to understand how shitty they were (outside of Catherine Bach, because wow. Masterpiece). That was obvious.

I hated Star Wars: The Phantom Menace when my roommate dragged me to the premier. I wasn’t the biggest Star Wars fan, though I like the original series, but I couldn’t help but think, fuck, people waited twenty-five years for fucking THIS?

I mean, the text scroll starts by talking about tax and trade disputes. Tell me you’re an out of touch rich guy without telling me you’re a rich guy, right? Then, comes the wooden acting, and all around poor script. I mean, you’ve got Evan McGregor and Liam Neeson, and the only halfway decent performance comes from teenage Natalie Portman. I don’t include the racist caricatures of the Gungans and Neimoidians or the original character redux performances of C3PO, Yoda, Jabba, etc., where it’s imitation and not performance. And while I hated everything to do with the kid, it’s not Jake Lloyd’s fault. Like I said, one halfway decent performance coaxed by a director, who should know better, out of some pretty heavyweight talent means the kid is not at fault. The script had so much exposition as to be almost on par an 80s TV movie. How could we excoriate a child for material Academy Award winners couldn’t make compelling?

Anyways, my point is that sometimes, I find things better than I thought they were, and sometimes worse. This time, the result was exactly the same.

What a piece of shit.

Anyway, my point is that in trying to explore kindness while I write Father Lightning, I’m finding the shadow of my prior focus on conflict and anger and myopia is like a phantom menace haunting the back halls of my mind.

I’m finding kindness quite difficult these days, and fucking Jar Jar Binks didn’t help.

Bad fucking hoodoo, man. Bad fucking art.

angry

My wife says I’m angry. I say she’s angry. She says that’s just at her daughter, but it bleeds out into the rest of the world.

Mine does as well. I’m sick of other people.

I listen to A Wave Across The Bay and I want that for myself.

I want endless falling, never crashing, never landing, never ceasing to exist, but never engaging again.

Endless travel, free of care, free of responsibility.

When Sartre says hell is other people, he might be on to a thing.

father’s day 2026

Not my immediate family, but man, it’s funny how everyone says Happy Father’s Day to a person, then curls the corner of their mouth in a snide rebuff, at the word step.

Here’s to all the men who stepped in when the biological fathers could or would not.

You deserve to be recognized, and not given the proverbial asterisk.
